>>JOHN CAME IN, HE WANTED ME TO DESIGN A
GARDEN.>>IT WAS JUAN’S FIRST DESIGN, ENCOURAGED
BY HIS MENTOR DICKEY PATTERSON AT ITS A JUNGLE. SINCE HE IS OFTEN ON THE ROAD HE LOOKED TO
JUAN TO CREATE A GARDEN TO GREET HIM WHEN HE CAME HOME.
HIS EDUCATION STARTED WITH ROSES.>>I WAS NEVER A ROSE PERSON, SO I WENT TO
THE GARDEN CENTER AND THEY — THEY SAID WHY DON’T YOU TRY SOME ROSES IN THE FRONT YARD?
I’M ON THE ROAD AND WHEN I GET HOME, I’VE GOT MY SUITCASE IN HAND AND I SPEND 10 MENTION
BEFORE I GO — 10 MINUTES INSIDE BEFORE I GO INSIDE.
NOW I’M LIKE I TAKE MY ROSES IN. IT’S JUST GORGEOUS.
I THINK THEY ARE WONDERFUL.>>I NEVER DESIGNED A GARDEN, HE TOLD ME DO
WHATEVER YOU WANTED, I JUST CAME IN AND SEE THE GARDEN, TAKING OUT ALL OF THE GRASS AND
DESIGN IT BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT I LIKE.>>I CAME HOME ONE DAY FROM WORK AND HE HAD
TAKEN ALL THE GRASS OUT OF THE FRONT YARD. THAT WAS KIND OF A SURPRISE.
[LAUGHTER] HE HAD RENTED A BOBCAT, SCRAPED IT CLEAN.
>>SINCE JUAN DID THE WORK ON HIS DAYS OFF, JOHN’S FIRST REVELATION ABOUT GARDENING IS
THAT IT DOESN’T HAPPEN OVERNIGHT.>>JUST TAKING THE GRASS OUT, PUTTING THE
DIRT DOWN AND PUTTING ALL OF THE PAVERS, TOOK A LOT OF TIME.
THE PLANNING OF — THE PLANTING OF THE PLANT IS THE LEAST AMOUNT OF TIME.
>>WE PICKED THE PLANTS TOGETHER SO HE HAD SOMETHING HE LIKES, I HAVE SOMETHING THAT
I KNOW WORKS IN TEXAS.>>JUAN ALSO TAUGHT JOHN ABOUT PLANTING IN
GROUPS. VARIATIONS AND TEXTURES AND HEIGHT.
JOHN’S EDUCATION INCLUDED HOW TO CREATE PROGRESSION AND INTEREST WITH LEVELS, GEOMETRIC PATTERNS
AND MULTIPLE PATHWAY TEXTURES. [ ¶ MUSIC PLAYING ¶¶ ] HE LEARNED THE WATER
SAVING VALUE OF NEW MULCH EVERY YEAR, ASIDE FROM ITS VISUAL IMPACT.
>>WE DID LIKE THE RED MULCH. THAT SEEMS TO KIND OF POP ALL OF THE GREEN
PLANTS OUT.>>HE ALSO LIKES THE TRELLIS THAT JUAN BUILT
AND COVERED WITH FRAGRANT ROSES TO GREET HIM AS HE WALKS TO THE DOOR.
>>THAT MAKES A LOT OF DIFFERENCE IN THE HOUSE.>>IN FACT JOHN DID ANOTHER OVERHAUL WHEN
HE INSTALLED A POOL AND WANTED TO PLANT IT WITH GARDENS.
FRAME IT WITH GARDENS. [ ¶ MUSIC PLAYING ¶¶ ] JUAN — THE BARRIERS
WITH A VARIETY OF HEARTY TROPICALS AND SOUTHWESTERN CHOICES.
FOR GROUND COVER HE CHOSE MEXICAN FEATHER GRASS TO CONNECT THE SPACES.
SINCE JOHN IS OFTEN ON THE RUN, JUAN INSTALLED AN IRRIGATION SYSTEM ON A TIMER.
FOR EACH PLANT’S WATER NEEDS.>>WE — WE HAVEN’T HAD VERY MUCH TROUBLE
WITH PESTS, EITHER.>>MAINLY WHAT JOHN HAS LEARNED IS THAT A
GARDEN IS NEVER REALLY FINISHED.>>SOMETIMES IT’S, YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU PUT
A PLANT IN, IT DOESN’T QUITE LOOK RIGHT SO WE TAKE IT OUT AND PUT ANOTHER ONE IN.
SO IT’S KIND OF A — KIND OF AN EXPERIMENT AS WE GO ALONG.
IT’S REALLY RELAXING. I DIDN’T REALLY THINK THAT I WAS GOING TO
BE A GARDEN PERSON. UNTIL WE GOT THE GARDEN IN.
I STAY AT A LOT OF DIFFERENT HOTELS AND STUFF, I DON’T SEE ANYTHING QUITE LIKE THIS.
SO I’M REALLY PLEASED WITH JUST THE GARDEN DESIGN THAT JUAN CAME UP WITH.
BECAUSE IT’S — THEY ARE RELAXING. TO COME HOME AND JUST STAND IN YOUR FRONT
YARD, AFTER YOU’VE BEEN ON THE ROAD FOR FIVE DAYS, SEEMS A LITTLE STRANGE, BUT IT’S JUST
SO WELCOMING. WHEN I GET HERE.
I’LL COME OUT HERE TWO OR THREE TIMES A DAY, JUST WALK AROUND THE FRONT YARD FOR ABOUT
10 OR 15 MINUTES EACH TIME. IN THE BACK YARD, I GO OUT IN THE BACK YARD
PROBABLY 15, 20 TIMES DURING THE DAY. YOU KNOW, I DON’T REALLY DO ANYTHING.
JUST WANDER AROUND AND LOOK AT THE GARDEN.>>YOU KNOW, IT’S PEACEFUL SO PEOPLE CAN FEEL
COMFORTABLE IN THEIR HOUSES, THEY CAN HAVE, I DON’T KNOW, SOMETHING TO LOOK AT IT WHEN
THEY GO OUT OR WHEN THEY CAME INTO THE HOUSES.
